Online sports forums....

You'll oftentimes hear some of the most ridiculous sports comments if you go to an online sports forum (ex: STL Today).

I can't tell you how hard I was laughing while listening to Bernie Miklasz on the radio yesterday talking about the questions some of the posters put up on his forum (Bernie's Press Box).

Here are two great ones he mentioned...

1. Do you think that the Cardinals would move Rick Ankiel to second base for 2009?

2. Do you think the Rams might consider drafting Chase McDaniels in the upcoming draft?

Some Sunday evening thoughts...

1. If you ever get the chance to try coffee direct from Hawaii, that stuff is amazing. I was over at my Grandma's house this evening for dinner, and she had a jar of coffee that she got from Hawaii the last time she was over there (which was a few months ago). You'd think that a-few-months-old coffee wouldn't be all that great, but this was probably one of the top 5 best coffees I've ever tasted. Smooth and flavorful...just amazing. I've still got a bunch if anyone doesn't believe me.

2. Missouri will be playing in the Alamo Bowl vs. Northwestern. Not exactly a marquee matchup...but since when was Missouri a marquee team? They DID lose almost every game they played against a respectable opponent (Oklahoma State, Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma). The only midly decent wins they had were against Illinois (whom then ranked, have since proven to be not much of a contender in 2008) and Nebraska (who we beat for the Big XII North title by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker). I'm not too excited about this game...but I'm sure I'll watch it anyways. Northwestern is still a solid opponent, as I'm sure Northwestern would say about Missouri. Obviously, though, both programs have their issues...and are thus not in major bowl games.

3. As I was looking at old pictures of my dad and grandma this evening, I was reminded that yes...these ARE the source of my genes. I look nearly identical to my dad when he was my age.

4. I sure hope that the Cardinals acquire some help during the Winter meetings. I was reading Derrick Goold's article in the newspaper and two names that struck me as intriguing were J.J. Putz and Huston Street. Either of these guys would be a nice short-term upgrade at the closer position. Low risk, due to the short-term nature of their contracts. It'd also be nice to acquire a starter in a trade with someone...ideally with one of the teams that either Putz or Street play for. Perhaps a package of...say...Francis & Street...or...Bedard & Putz.

5. I'm firmly convinced that the television station "Versus" shows the movie "Bloodsport" at least once a day. Mind you, there's nothing wrong with that. Bloodsport is a fantastic movie.

Mizzou - Oklahoma Game

So...if I'm like anyone else in the city of St. Louis...I tuned in...at least for a minute...to the Big 12 Championship game on Saturday night. This game, which always appears to be sponsored by Dr. Peppers (and as such, features a sickening amount of those Dr. J "Drink It Slow" ads), figured to be a blowout. For one, Missouri has never had much luck against Oklahoma (see last year's 2 games...or games between the two teams for the last 2 decades). For two, Missouri simply has bad defense...a recipe for disaster against an Oklahoma team that has a record-setting offense.

I held out hope that MAYBE...just maybe...Missouri could turn the tables on Oklahoma. Last year, they knocked us out of a title spot by beating us in the conference championship game (which I still think is a joke, since not all conferences have these games). The thought of Missouri knocking Oklahoma from their #2 ranking with a huge upset win was blissful.

Unfortunately, Missouri proved all the pundits correct by rolling over and dying against Oklahoma. They allowed over 60 points. I can't give you an exact number because my mind has decided to not remember that 1's place digit. All I needed to see was that we gave up over 60 points, and I purged the score in its entirety from my mind.

Hats off to Oklahoma. I hate 'em...but they do have a great team. They always have a great team. Bob Stoops is a great head coach. He recruits the best players, brings in the best assistants, and stands behind his school 100% (notably, by never leaving for an NFL head coaching job). I still think that the area in which they recruit the best is offensive line. They bring in some of the most monstrous looking human beings you'd ever witness to protect their quarterback and pave routes for their running back. They're almost ogrish in their builds. As one sportswriter put it...they resemble "manatees." I wouldn't be surprised if, upon taking off his jersey in the locker room, one of their O-linemen had "propeller-scars" on his back.

Anyways, this was a game that...I admit...I turned off the television about midway through the second quarter. I could already tell that Missouri's defense was doing absolutely nothing to stop the Oklahoma charge. This was one area that Missouri HAD to improve in to win the game...and they simply didn't improve. Thus, they lose the game to a certainly superior Oklahoma Sooners team. And I retire to a certainly boring load of laundry to fold in my basement.

On a positive note, there will be some great bowl games this year. Some of the mentioned Bowl games are...

Rose Bowl: USC vs. Penn State
Sugar Bowl: Alabama vs. Utah
Orange Bowl: Virginia Tech vs. Texas Tech

Return of The Blog

So...I used to have a blog...and then I stopped posting on it for a number of reasons. But that doesn't matter now...because my blog is back.

Now, I don't claim to be any kind of a top-notch writer or ridiculously entertaining person. But this is what I'm thinking. That's all this blog is about...my daily thoughts..."rants" mainly.
